Overhead Crane Service Q&A: What Are The Different Types of Gantry Cranes Inspections?

Accident prevention is essential to any type of organization, and it begins with a comprehensive equipment inspection. A full-service overhead crane company offering inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance, Integrity Crane and Hoist answers your questions about gantry crane inspections and why these are necessary.

Q: What are the benefits of regular gantry crane inspections?

A: Regular gantry crane inspections are necessary because it allows teams to identify wear and tear early on, which helps prevent disruptive equipment failure and life-threatening accidents. Teams can maintain consistent productivity rates since there’s no work stoppage due to repair work. Regular gantry crane inspections also extend the equipment’s usability, which helps save money on major repairs and equipment replacement.

Q: What are the factors to consider when conducting a gantry crane inspection?

A: The type and frequency of gantry crane inspections will depend on the manufacturer’s recommendations and the work conditions of the gantry crane. The frequency of the usage of the gantry crane is also an important consideration.

Q: What are the different types of gantry crane inspections?

A: There are four classifications of gantry crane inspections:

Frequent inspect/PM service cover both visual inspections and maintenance work to meet the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements. These take place daily to monthly as the service duty demands.

Speed controls, emergency and safety switches, and interlocks are checked during a routine inspection. Make sure all moving parts are lubricated, and required fluids are at their correct levels.

Periodic inspections. These are conducted on a monthly to annual basis as service duties are defined. Apart from inspecting parts recommended by the manufacturer, check critical components such as brakes, gears, fasteners, pins, shafts, wire ropes, sheaves, locking devices, couplings, torque arms, and buffers. This inspection covers all manufacturer-specific items and structural, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation components. The inspector will go over the gantry crane’s operational history, extraordinary events (e.g., overloads, duty changes, collisions), emergency functions, braking systems, and the disassembly and removal of paint, grease, and corrosion from critical components of the crane. The inspector will also check for signs of cracking, fatigue, and excessive stress.
